Holy Mass

These quotes remind me of the hidden mystery of the Holy Mass. I plan to review them before Mass during Lent. I'd encourage you to do the same if you also struggle with distractions.

All eyes and ears on Conclave

The conclave to elect the Catholic Church’s 266th Pontiff and St. Peter’s 265th successor gets underway in the Vatican on Tuesday, March 12, with some 5600 journalists and hundreds of cameras of the world’s media glued to the famous chimney atop the Sistine Chapel to know who the next spiritual leader of the world’s some 1.2 billion Catholics will be. The 115 Cardinal Electors who have already been allotted accommodation by lots at the Domus Santae Marthae residence inside Vatican City, will take up their rooms early Tuesday morning. At 10.00 am, they along with other cardinals will concelebrate the “Pro Eligendo Summo Pontefice” votive Mass for the election of the new Pope, in St. Peter’s Basilica, led by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo Sodano. All faithful have been invited for the Mass. At 3.45 pm in the evening, the cardinal electors will transfer to the Pauline Chapel in the Apostolic Palace, from where at 4.30 pm they set will out in procession from there to the Sistine Chapel, chanting the Litany of Saints and the Latin hum to the Holy Spirit, ‘Veni Creator Spiritus”. 
Besides the cardinal electors, the procession, which will be telecast live, will include also others, such as the choir, secretary of the conclave, the preacher Cardinal Prosper Grech and Msgr. Guido Marini, the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations. At the Sistine Chapel, after the oath of secrecy is administered by the Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re (the senior-most cardinal bishop), Msgr. Guido Marini, the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations will ask all non-voters to leave the Sistine Chapel with the Latin command, “Extra Omnes,” meaning ‘all out.” After Card. Prosper Grech, preaches a meditation to the cardinal electors, he along with Msgr. Marini will also leave the Sistine Chapel, for Cardinal Re to take charge of the proceedings of the polling and scrutiny in total secrecy. The world’s most famous smoke signal from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, will be the first indication whether or not a new pope has been elected. Black smoke will mean no pope as yet; white smoke will mean we have a new pope with two-thirds majority. Fr. Lombardi informed that the first smoke signal of the 2005 Conclave that later elected Pope Benedict XVI was at 8.04 pm. He said Tuesday’s smoke could be around that time.

Conclave - Sistine Chapel Closed for Public

For the coming conclave, the Sistine Chapel will be closed to the public. During the same period, Vatican Museums, the Borgia Apartment and Collection of Modern Religious Art will also be closed for visitors. For the 25th time, the Sistine Chapel will go back to being the silent witness of the election of the new Pope. The 115 cardinal electors come under the immortal Michelangelo's frescoes to choose the successor of St. Peter. 

The Sistine Chapel - which in 1996 became the official seat of the Conclave with the Apostolic Constitution "Universi Dominici Gregis" of John Paul II - will be equipped with 115 cherry chairs, marked with the name of each Cardinal elector, and twelve wooden tables covered with a beige and burgundy satin cloth, six on the right side and six on the left, arranged in two rows of different levels. In front of the altar, under the Last Judgment, a table for the urn of raw wood, and a lectern with the Gospel on which Cardinals will be sworn in. The velvet bag to pick up the cards and place cards with the names of Cardinals, which will be equipped with pen, folder and a red card for scrutiny, will also soon be ready.

As is the tradition since 1939, the Conclave that elected Pope Pius XII, beyond the marble railing, will have the famous stove (two similar structures attached) that will be used to burn the cards and where the chimney will exit the "smoke". Voting results will in fact be made visible by the color of smoke that come out of the chimney installed on the roof of the Sistine Chapel: black smoke in the cases not reached majority, white smoke for the election of the new Pope.

The rites of the conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI will be opened in St. Peter's Basilica with the Mass "Pro eligendo Pope", after which all the cardinals Voters will go to the Sistine Chapel at the beginning of the real Conclave. To elect the Pope will require a qualified majority of two-thirds of the cardinals electors. 

Conclave to begin on Tue 2013 March 12th

The eighth General Congregation of the College of Cardinals held on Friday evening has decided that the Conclave will begin on Tuesday, 12 March 2013, the Vatican’s Press Office has said. A “pro eligendo Romano Pontifice” Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica in the morning. In the afternoon the cardinals will enter into the Conclave.
There were 18 interventions during Friday morning’s congregation, bringing the total number of interventions so far to over a hundred, with some of the cardinals having spoken more than once. 

The general themes of Friday’s interventions touched upon issues such as inter-religious dialogue, the current culture, bioethics, justice in the world and the importance of preaching Christianity and the love and mercy of God. Only one General Congregation is scheduled for Saturday, with Sunday left free for cardinals to visit and pray at their titular churches. 

After Pope Benedict XVI stepped down on Feb. 28, the Catholic Church is in “Sede Vacante” or “Empty See”, until his successor is elected. Currently, the body of cardinals worldwide, known as the College of Cardinals stands at 207, of whom 117 are below 80 years of age and hence are eligible to vote for a new Pope. Two of the cardinal electors had earlier declared they would not participate in the upcoming conclave, which the College of Cardinals accepted on Friday. Hence only 115 cardinals will vote for the new Pope.

ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച രാവിലെ വിശുദ്ധ പത്രോസിന്‍റെ ബസിലിക്കയില്‍ പുതിയ പാപ്പയുടെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനായുള്ള പ്രത്യേക ദിവ്യബലി അര്‍പ്പിക്കപ്പെടും. ഉച്ചതിരിഞ്ഞ് സിസ്റ്റൈന്‍ കപ്പേളയിലായിരിക്കും ആത്മീയവും രഹസ്യാത്മകവുമായ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു നടപടികള്‍ നടക്കുന്നതെന്നും വത്തിക്കാന്‍റെ പ്രസ്താവ അറിയിച്ചു.

പാപ്പയുടെ സ്ഥാനത്യാഗത്തിനുശേഷം 20 ദിവസത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ പുതിയ പാപ്പയെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാനുള്ള കോണ്‍ക്ലേവ് കൂടിയിരിക്കണമെന്നുള്ള Universi Dominici Gregis എന്ന 1992-ല്‍ ജോണ്‍ പോള്‍ രണ്ടാമന്‍ പാപ്പ പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച അപ്പസ്തോലിക പ്രബോധനത്തിന്‍റെ പിന്‍ബലത്തില്‍ കോണ്‍ക്ലേവ് വേഗമുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു. മുന്‍പാപ്പ ബനഡിക്ട് 16-ാമന്‍റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു സംബന്ധിച്ച സ്വധികാര പ്രബോധന പ്രകാരം Normas Nunnullas കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളന്മാരുടെ സംഘം വത്തിക്കാനില്‍ എത്തിക്കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ 15 ദിവസത്തിനു മുന്‍പ് കോണ്‍ക്ലേവു തീരുമാനിച്ചു നടത്താന്‍ സംഘത്തിന് അധികാരമുണ്ടെന്നും വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു.

പാപ്പയെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുവാനുള്ള കോണ്‍ക്ലേവിന് ഒരുക്കമായി കര്‍ദ്ദിനാള്‍ സംഘം വത്തിക്കാനിലെ സിനഡുഹാളില്‍ സമ്മേളിച്ചു.

മാര്‍ച്ചു 6-ാം തിയതി ബുധനാഴ്ച രാവിലെ ചേര്‍ന്ന കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളന്മാരുടെ 
4-ാംമത്തെ പൊതുസമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ സന്നിഹിതരായിരുന്ന 153 കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളന്മാരില്‍ 113 പേര്‍ പാപ്പയുടെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ വോട്ടവകാശമുളളവരായിരുന്നു. 
ഇനിയും രണ്ടു കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളന്മാര്‍ കൂടി എത്തിച്ചേരുമ്പോഴാണ് കോണ്‍ക്ലേവിലേയ്ക്കുള്ള കോറം തികയുന്നതെന്ന് വത്തിക്കാന്‍ പ്രസ്സ് ഓഫിസ് മേധാവി ഫാദര്‍ ഫ്രദറിക്കോ ലൊമ്പാര്‍ഡി മാധ്യമ സമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.

പാപ്പയെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാനുള്ള കോണ്‍ക്ലേവിനൊരുക്കമായി വത്തിക്കാനില്‍ പൊതു ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ആരാധനയും പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. മാര്‍ച്ച് 6-ാം തിയതി ബുധനാഴ്ച വൈകുന്നേരം 5 മണിക്കാണ് വത്തിക്കാനിലെ വിശുദ്ധ പത്രോസിന്‍റെ ബസലിക്കയില്‍ പാപ്പയുടെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന്‍റെ നിയോഗവുമായി പ്രത്യേക ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ആരാധനയും പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. 

ദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ആരാധനയ്ക്ക് ആമുഖമായി കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളന്മാര്‍ വിശ്വാസികള്‍ക്കൊപ്പം ലത്തീന്‍ ഇറ്റാലിയന്‍ ഭാഷകളില്‍ രണ്ടു ജപമാലയും കോണ്‍ക്ലേവിന്‍റെ നിയോഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി സമര്‍പ്പിക്കും. 
കര്‍ദ്ദിനാള്‍ സംഘത്തിലെ കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളാന്മാരില്‍നിന്നുണ്ടായ അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥന പ്രകാരമാണ് പൊതുദിവ്യകാരുണ്യ ആരാധന നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്, വിശുദ്ധ പത്രോസിന്‍റെ ബസിലിക്കയുടെ പ്രധാന അള്‍ത്താരയില്‍ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ആരാധനയ്ക്കും പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയ്ക്കും, പാപ്പയുടെ ആഭാവത്തില്‍, കര്‍ദ്ദിനാളന്മാരുടെ സംഘത്തലവന്‍ ആഞ്ചലോ സൊഡാനോ നയിക്കും. 

പ്രത്യേക കാര്‍മ്മികത്വമില്ലാത്ത ആരാധനക്രമ ശുശ്രൂഷയുടെ അന്ത്യത്തില്‍ ബസിലിക്കയുടെ പ്രധാന പുരോഹിതന്‍, കര്‍ദ്ദിനാള്‍ ആഞ്ചെലോ കോമാസ്ട്രി സമാപന ശിര്‍വ്വാദം നല്കുമെന്നും വത്തിക്കാന്‍റെ പ്രസ്താവന വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി.
